Biological Process Intensification in Wastewater

With No Additional Energy or Chemicals

Boost efficiency, increase capacity, meet regulatory compliance and lower costs, all while protecting the environment.

Wastewater Treatment Challanges

Increasingly strict discharge regulations

High energy and chemical costs

Excessive sludge production

Lack of capacity to meet growing demand

Aging, inefficient infrastructure

High costs associated with building new plants or expanding existing ones

ProBio Media

The Sustainable, High-Performance Solution

NanoClear's ProBio Media (PBM) is revolutionizing biological wastewater treatment. Our nano-enhanced ceramic media provides an ideal environment for beneficial bacteria to thrive, resulting in:

Unprecedented removal rates for ammonia, nitrates, and organics

Boosted treatment capacity without major infrastructure upgrades

Reduced chemical and energy inputs

Reliable, low-maintenance operation

Minimized sludge production

PBM integrates seamlessly into any existing activated sludge system, MBBR, or facultative lagoons. It's the cost-effective, eco-friendly solution for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.

Inside ProBio Media: Harnessing the Power of Nature

NanoClear's patented ceramic media features a highly porous structure with an unmatched surface area of over 2,000,000 m2/m3. Interconnected channels within the media allow for optimal flow and oxygen transfer.

Wastewater flows through PBM's porous structure

Pollutants diffuse into biofilm for rapid biodegradation

Aerobic and anoxic zones form to support nitrification and denitrification

Treated water exits while bacteria remain attached, eliminating washout

This dynamic environment promotes the growth of diverse, robust microbial communities that efficiently remove pollutants without the limitations of conventional aerated systems. The result is a more compact, capable, and resilient treatment process.

ProBio Media Results

PBM has been proven effective across a wide range of applications, from municipal plants to industrial operations.

inudstrial wastewater treatment

Problem

A 1,000-gallon industrial wastewater pretreatment system faced high levels of ammonia and BOD that required reduction to meet effluent standards.

Solution

A small quantity of PBM, housed in plastic balls, was added to the system with controlled dissolved oxygen (DO) at 5 mg/L and a median pH of 6.6 over a testing period of 3,000 hours.

Results:

  • Ammonia (NH₃) levels reduced from 21-34.6 mg/L (median 29.4 mg/L) to as low as 0.1 mg/L.

  • BOD/TOC decreased from an average of 45 mg/L to 3.3 mg/L.

  • Nitrate (NO₃) levels reduced from 30 mg/L to an average of 8 mg/L, achieving a denitrification efficiency of 72%.

Municipal Wastewater Treatment

Problem

A 1 MGD municipal wastewater treatment plant in Union, OH, had retention time limitations that prevented it from meeting discharge standards.

Solution

PBM, equivalent to 5% of the aerated reactor volume, was added to the system to enhance treatment capacity.

Results:

  • Ammonia levels in effluent reduced by 75%.

  • Treatment improvements observed within one month, and after 18 months, media inspection showed no significant fouling.

Chicken Farm Wastewater Discharge

Problem

An existing treatment system at a chicken farm struggled to meet strict ammonia and nitrogen discharge standards.

Solution

A prefabricated treatment module with PBM and a low-energy air pump was installed to maintain required aeration levels.

Results:

  • The system consistently achieved ammonia levels below 1 mg/L since its 2022 installation, requiring minimal maintenance.
